OPPO had another device up its sleeve last week at the Singapore launch event. Together with the flagship N3, OPPO launched the R5 as well and instead of going for might, the phone is going for beauty; just like the others in the ‘R’ series it precedes.
The R5 shares a lot of similarities in build quality and features with the N3 but the selling point of the device is its girth. The R5 is only 4.85 mm thick and that makes it the world’s thinnest phone at this point of time.
Even with such a slim profile, the R5 is no lightweight when it comes to features. The phone comes with a 5.2” AMOLED display that provides a wider viewing angle with high contrast and brightness. The display is also covered by a Gorilla Glass 3 scratch-resistant panel for added protection. On the inside, the R5 has a reinforced industrial grade aluminium alloy micro-arc frame that is said to have been forged nine times, and then finished by hand to give it that sheen and that polished feel. The slender build of the R5 also made OPPO to rethink the material that was being used. This was a necessary step as it will have to dissipate the heat generated by the processor and to keep the phone running cool. OPPO settled on its own patented phase-shifting material, called Cool Element, which is made out of metal, resin and other composite materials. This material improves thermal efficiency, absorbs heat and still fits into a smaller space.
The Snapdragon 615 powering the R5 is also another important choice as this is a 64-bit capable processor. This means that when OPPO adapts Android 5.0 (Lollipop) for its ColorOS, the R5 will be ready to run in full 64-bit mode.
